Margaret Boden is a Research Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Sussex in England. She helped to develop the world’s first academic program in cognitive science, she was also the founding Dean of the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at the University of Sussex. She has received numerous degrees in social psychology, medical sciences and modern philosophy. She was awarded an honorary degree from Open University as Doctor of the University. At the University of Sussex, her research covers many fields: cognitive science, computer science, psychology, artificial intelligence, informatics, and philosophy.

Margaret Boden released her first publication on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 1972 and ever since has experienced significant success within the world of AI. She has published numerous publications and books some include: The Creative Mind: Myths and Mechanisms, Mind As Machine: A History of Cognitive Science, and Creativity and Art: Three Roads to Surprise. Margaret believes that after reading “Plans and structured behavior” by George Miller (Miller 2013), she realized that computer science and psychology intersect in a beautiful way. It was that book that started her on her journey in AI. Margaret’s view of AI comes from a multitude of backgrounds, as she believes that we cannot approach AI from just one discipline. She explains that AI is actually a method of understanding the human brain and our brains functions due to a multitude of systems working in harmony. I would say that her greatest legacy is the School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences that she started at the University of Sussex and the world’s first cognitive science program. Boden has taught some incredible computer scientists including: Elizabeth Churchill, who is
currently the director of user experience at Google, and Ian Cullimore, who created the pocket PC.
