Kate Crawford

By: Robert Lingerfelt

Kate Crawford is a force to be reckoned with in the Machine Learning community. To attempt to sum up her accomplishments in this one-page paper would be a futile effort. She has many roles in society, she is the co-founder and director of AI Now at NYU as well as a research professor, writer, composer, and producer.[1] Overall a very full plate, she released 3 albums with Canberra Electronic Music between 1998 and 2003. She got a PHD from Sydney, she is also a member of the feminist collective, “Deep Lab.” She has many publications and she is largely influenced by social media and the effects it has on society. After she received her Ph.D., she wrote a book on her dissertation called “Adult Themes – Rewriting the Rules of Adulthood,” which won the Manning Clark National Cultural Award.[2]

She is also very involved member in the AI Ethics world. Being so accomplished and so well-known gives her a strong voice and a lot of authority in the AI community. She is frequently invited to speak at large scale events such as TED, SXSW and the Royal Society. Being such a substantial character in the world of AI and having such an interest in ethics led her to found AI Now. AI Now is an institute that is interdisciplinary and allows multiple groups to come together and work on a unifying project and regulate ethics for machine learning. Through doing this it gives the power over ethics to multiple fields by allowing the decisions to be made collectively as a group, therefore equalizing the power of the group and allowing for more informed decisions to be made.

While these may be her most notable accomplishments, there are many more uncovered. She is the lead researcher for Microsoft, a huge accomplishment in and of itself, while also pursuing the reigning in of big data bias and the effects of social media on the culture.[3]

She is a force to be reckoned with and is making big changing in the world of AI.  While her influence may be broad, her focus is on making an ethical future happen when AI is a mainstay for most of our worldly needs. While this is a big task Kate Crawford through assembling a team of diverse backgrounds, AI Now, is making big changes and pushing the future into the right direction.[4]
